Roger's story
Hip Replacement Allows Travel Enthusiast to Get Back on the Road

Roger, 69, and his wife, Barbara, are world travelers—the two have visited 10 European countries, all 50 states and have taken 38 cruises to various parts of the world. While the couple has always enjoyed travel, the frequency of their trips increased in the 11 years following Roger’s retirement from a successful chemistry career.

Determined to take full advantage of their free time in retirement, Roger and Barbara relocated to Florida from Milwaukee. When he wasn’t exploring new locations on vacation, Roger enjoyed spending time on the golf course several days a week, tending his garden and sharing a bottle of wine from his personal collection with family and friends.

Unfortunately, arthritis pain began interfering with some of Roger’s favorite activities, and over the years it gradually got worse. Gardening became a chore because Roger couldn’t kneel down, and his golf game suffered as he struggled to maintain his balance while swinging a club. And while the pain never forced Roger to give up traveling, it became more difficult for him to fully enjoy the trips due to his limited mobility.

When Roger’s doctor told him that his left hip was deteriorating rapidly and he’d need to use a cane to continue walking, Roger decided to begin exploring his options for hip replacement surgery. He learned about a hip replacement seminar being given by a local orthopaedic surgeon and decided to attend.

At the seminar, the orthopaedic surgeon described a technique called the Anterior Approach to hip replacement. Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, which requires a surgeon to cut major muscles and tissues, the Anterior Approach allows a surgeon to work between the muscles and tissues without detaching them from either the hip or thighbones, potentially reducing patient recovery time.

After consulting with an orthopaedic surgeon, Roger agreed that the Anterior Approach was the right option for him and they chose Pinnacle® Hip Solutions from DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. One study conducted since the device was approved in 2002 observed that an estimated 99.9% of Pinnacle hip components remain in use.1 Only Pinnacle Hip Solutions feature TrueGlide™ technology, allowing the body to create a thin film of lubrication between surfaces. The result is a more fluid range of natural motion that more closely matches the feeling and movement of a natural hip.

One day after his surgery, Roger was able to walk with assistance, and within three days he was home from the hospital. Roger closely followed his physical therapy plan, and today he can walk and enjoy all of his favorite activities without debilitating hip pain.

His mobility restored, Roger is now back on the golf course and enjoying his garden. This summer, Roger and Barbara traveled to Washington State to visit several local wineries. What’s next for the couple? They’ll be exploring the Caribbean on their 39th cruise. “Now that I’m no longer limited by severe hip pain, I’m back to doing what I love again,” says Roger.

Roger recommends that people who are dealing with similar hip pain should start by doing some research.  “Definitely check into your treatment options,” he says.  “It’s truly wonderful having my life back.”

Roger’s story may not be typical. The performance of a hip replacement depends on your age, weight, activity level and other factors. There are potential risks, and recovery takes time. People with conditions limiting rehabilitation should not have this surgery. Only an orthopedic surgeon can tell if hip replacement is right for you.
